Hi, I'm Grant and I'm the one man operation that is Connect Woodworking,
a small artisan workshop based in Forres in the North of Scotland. I make stuff that is interesting, beautiful and useful. I make new things, cool things, I repair old things and I re-make things that have been forgotten I've always been among wood. My father was a woodcutter and sawmiller who showed me how to make stuff with my hands - and gave me a great respect for trees, nature and the environment. So woodwork is pretty much in my blood. I grew up in a kinda older tradition that involved skill, ingenuity and quietness, and was fortunate to have been around woodworking folks who did things the old way. I was taught to appreciate trees and what they provide, whether living in a forest or harvested to make something useful. So I try to use native wood, FSC and reclaimed timber if I can. Trees have a magic all of their own and I try to share this magic with my customers. I previously had a career in Engineering and software but I found I needed to get back to working with my hands. Fortunately this means I can sometimes combine traditional woodworking with interesting high tech stuff . Maybe not surprisingly, I also have a healthy obsession with DIY renewables and design some low tech environmental solutions too. Woodworking nowadays doesn't need to be the noisy, dusty operation that most experience - well not all the time. There is still a place for the old techniques - many are just as efficient as modern practices in todays woodworking. I believe in a pragmatic hybrid approach that uses the best of both worlds. Whereas we may use machines to do the hard work, the peace and stillness, the concentration and the connection of unplugged woodwork is definitely good for the soul. Hand tools allow me to bring out a deeper beauty inside everything I make - and I love it. Or, if you want something made or repaired, let me know - I'd love to hear from you. |
